Congratulation to the 2017 Farmax Emerging Rural Professional of the Year Award Winner!

Stacey Belton AgFirst2

Farmax is pleased to present AgFirst consultant, Stacey Belton with the Farmax Emerging Rural Professional of the Year Award at the NZIPIM Rural Professional of the Year Awards 2017. Stacey is a dairy consultant for AgFirst in Hamilton, specialising in feed planning, environmental implications and nutrient management. She was thrilled to take home the award, saying “I really love my job and I put a lot of effort into it and it is a really great feeling to be recognised as contributing to the industry.”

As a rural consultant – and an accredited Farmax consultant – she believes a crucial element is knowledge transfer and supporting busy farmers, so that they can focus on running their business while she fills in the finer details. “There is so much information to keep track of in the industry...as a consultant I provide the link between the farmer and industries such as research and development and ensuring that farmers are up-to-date on the latest ideas,” says Stacey.

Stacey has an extensive rural background that spans all the way from Canterbury to Northland. Born and raised on a family farm in Matamata, she then went on to complete a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with First Class Honours at Lincoln University. After studying she took up a consulting position with AgFirst in Northland, and two years later moved to the Hamilton office.

Despite being busy with her role as a rural professional and being treasurer for the Matamata Cycling Club, Stacey is keen to expand her agricultural activities and learning: “I would like to get more involved in industry groups, especially now that my confidence in my role has grown and I feel like I can contribute now having more experience.”

As part of her award, Stacey has won paid hours to complete research that is relevant to the industry. Stacey’s project is set to be timely and interesting as she looks at how to attract more young people into the agricultural consultancy profession. Her goal is to make it easier for the next generation coming through to fill in the spaces when current consultants retire in 10, 20 or 30 years, because there will be a giant knowledge and skill gap that needs to be filled.

“The age of the average farm consultant is increasing and I don’t see a lot of young people coming through the ranks in this profession…some initial thoughts are how do we get more money from the tasks these young consultants are doing? Does the government need to subsidize this service? Do we need a training ground like in the MAF days?” Stacey explains.

The project is set to be completed next year, and we very much look forward to the results and insights she presents. A huge congratulations to Stacey from the Farmax team!
